Where’s The Money? A Fresh Look at Sustaining Tobacco Control Programs
Monday, January 14, 2013
12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT/2 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET - (90 minutes)
Summary:
States are missing an opportunity to invest in tobacco control programs and save lives and money, according to the recent Broken Promises to Our Children report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Tobacco use remains the #1 cause of preventable death in the U.S. and a large driver of healthcare costs, yet only 1.8 percent of the money states collect in revenue from the tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes is spent on programs to help tobacco users quit and prevent kids from starting to use tobacco.
State and local health department staff, tobacco control advocates, and other partners can prepare now to change this in 2013.
During this webinar, CTFK staff will highlight the latest news on state tobacco funding from the Broken Promises report and showcase relevant new materials. Also, state health department staff and their advocacy partners will share new tools and templates that they've used to make the case for sustainability of tobacco control programs. Representatives from multiple states will explain how they have engaged supporters in proactively educating key decision makers to raise awareness about the impacts of tobacco control efforts, advocate for sustained tobacco control funding, and defend against budget cuts.
