Tobacco use remains a major public health problem in Texas and across the nation. It is one of the main risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Every year, tobacco use continues to claim the lives of 28,000 Texans while costing the state $10.29 billion in annual health care costs directly caused by smoking. This is preventable.
The Eliminate Tobacco Use Initiative convenes an annual summit addressing the key areas of policy, prevention/education, cessation/treatment and research.
The Eliminate Tobacco Use Summit creates a collaborative environment for institutions of higher education, along with key stakeholders at the state and national level to share best practices and increase their network and community of support.
