Through with Chew Week

Through with Chew Week is an annual, nationwide effort to draw awareness to the public health issue of smokeless tobacco use. The Through with Chew Week Toolkit was designed for Wyoming Tobacco-Free Community Program Managers to enhance their efforts in conducting a successful Through With Chew Week and Great American Spit Out. Individuals from other states may be able to use these activities to raise awareness and promote these events in their local communities or statewide. Click here for more information.

Webinar: Social Marketing and Tobacco Campaigns

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) is hosting this webinar on the role of social marketing campaigns in tobacco prevention/cessation efforts with expert presenters from Better World Advertising and the California Smokers’ Helpline. The presenters will give an overview of Better World Advertising’s recent tobacco campaigns; discuss how to target different audiences, including smokers (LGBT community, youth, tweens) and influencers (providers, teachers, parents) with distinct messages; provide an overview of the California Smokers’ Helpline’s recent print and digital advertising campaign targeted to behavioral health professionals; and explain the importance of targeting behavioral health professionals with cessation messaging and the keys to cost effective provider advertising. Break Free Alliance Webinar on Dual Use

Save the date! Break Free Alliance is hosting a webinar sponsored by the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, Division of Tobacco Prevention on the dual use of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes. The webinar will highlight the recommendations that came out of the publication, Addressing Dual Tobacco Use in West Virginia: Report and Recommendations of the Expert Panel. Presenters will also provide some background on dual use and will discuss why it is an emerging issue that states need to address. Information on how to register will be provided at a later date.

Kick Butts Day

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is planning for the best and biggest Kick Butts Day yet. Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Teachers, youth leaders, and health advocates can organize events to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free, and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco. The Kick Butts Day website, www.kickbuttsday.org, has been redesigned to make it even easier to participate in Kick Butts Day. The site includes step-by-step directions to plan a Kick Butts Day event or activity, register an event (so that CTFK can help promote it), as well as new information to make the KBD website a year-round resource for youth advocates fighting tobacco. Public Workshop: "Third Party Governance of Industry-Sponsored Tobacco Product Research"

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) is hosting a public workshop entitled "Third Party Governance of Industry-Sponsored Tobacco Product Research." The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the recommendation made by an Institute of Medicine report which states that sponsors of Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) applications use independent third parties to undertake one or more key functions in tobacco product research. Also known as third party governance, the FDA is considering this idea as it relates more generally to tobacco research. Scientific and medical experts; other interested participants from academia, public health organizations, federal, state and local government agencies, independent research organizations, contract research organizations, and the tobacco industry; and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend. 6th Annual Preparing for the 7th Generation Conference

American Indian Tribes and the state of Oklahoma are working together and sharing resources to host the Preparing for the 7th Generation conference to reduce the death and disease associated with commercial tobacco use and addiction. The unique collaboration between these groups considers the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations so they no longer have to suffer the consequences of commercial tobacco abuse experienced today. At this conference, attendees will learn about the impact of commercial tobacco abuse in American Indian communities, tobacco control strategies that are working in Indian Country, and how to collaborate more closely with tribal organizations to more effectively address tobacco-related disparities.
