Summary:
The public health community is united in support of comprehensive smoke-free air laws and their vigilant enforcement. Unfortunately all laws are not comprehensive; allowing for exemptions that reduce their effectiveness. The resulting inequities cause most harm to those with the least power to correct the problems. The TCN webinar, “Smoke-free Air Policy as a Social Justice Issue,” will provide an overview of this dilemma from several viewpoints, identify localities where there are opportunities to address the problems, and provide examples of how to highlight the injustices in smoke-free air campaigns.

Webinar Materials:

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  • Increase awareness of the injustices caused by smoke-free air laws that do not cover all bars, casinos and other hospitality venues.
  • Identify opportunities to address these injustices
  • Identify ways to communicate the social injustices caused by smoke-free air policies that do not cover all workers.
  • Recognize the value of working with National Networks for Tobacco Control and Prevention to address disparities issues.

Speakers:

This teleconference series is part of a Tobacco Control Network special project “TCN Strategies for Smoke-Free Air Policy Implementation” and is made possible through the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
