Electronic cigarettes and conventional cigarette use among US adolescents: A cross-sectional study – JAMA Pediatrics. Data from a representative sample of American middle and high school students in 2011 and 2012 found that among cigarette experimenters (at least one puff), ever e-cigarette use was associated with higher odds of ever smoking cigarettes (at least 100 cigarettes smoked) and current cigarette smoking, and lower odds of abstinence from conventional cigarettes. The researchers concluded that use of e-cigarettes may encourage conventional cigarette use among adolescents; however, further research is needed to assess the impact of e-cigarette and cigarette smoking and cessation patterns over time.
