Multiple tobacco product use among adults in the United States: Cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, hookah, smokeless tobacco, and snusPreventive Medicine. An analysis of data from the 2012 National Adult Tobacco Survey found that 10.6% of all U.S. adults use multiple tobacco products. The data suggested that multiple product use may be associated with past quit attempts. The researchers called for a better understanding of multiple product use involving combustible products, like cigars and hookah.

Cigarette smokers' use of unconventional tobacco products and associations with quitting activity: Findings from the ITC-4, U.S. cohortNicotine & Tobacco Research. An analysis of data from 6,110 adult American smokers from 2002-2011 found that those who used unconventional tobacco products were no more likely to stop using conventional cigarettes than those who did not use those products. Unconventional tobacco products were defined as e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and nicotine-containing tobacco products that promised reduced toxin exposure.

The land of 10,000 tobacco products: How Minnesota led the way in regulating tobacco products (MN)American Journal of Public Health. This policy brief describes how tobacco control laws may be updated to reflect the shifting tobacco marketplace in which tobacco manufacturers are marketing alternative tobacco products. With the 2010 enactment of the Tobacco Modernization and Compliance Act, Minnesota addressed regulatory gaps and created a model law for other states that can be applied to update definitions and strengthen future laws.

New e-cig TV spot comes very close to making health claims Ad Age. A new television spot, part of the “Friends Don’t Let Friends Smoke” campaign for NJoy e-cigarettes, depicts friends helping friends: by carrying a couch up a flight of stairs, delivering a best man speech at a wedding, and replacing a traditional cigarette with the electronic version. E-cigarette marketers currently have wide latitude to advertise on TV, but cannot make health claims about their products.

Utah health status update: Electronic cigarette use among Utah students (grades 8, 10, 12) and adults (UT)Utah Department of Health. Data from the Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA) conducted in Utah every other year has found that e-cigarette use has more than doubled among all age groups surveyed between 2011 and 2013. The PNA also found that Utah youth are three times more likely than adults to report e-cigarette use despite having no legal access to e-cigarettes. These data reiterate the need to monitor youth use of e-cigarettes.
