Public opinions on tax and retail-based tobacco control strategies – Tobacco Control. Researchers from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene investigated smokers’ and nonsmokers’ opinions on existing and theoretical tobacco control policies. Nonsmokers were significantly more likely to favor all tobacco control strategies, though more than half of smokers and nonsmokers alike favored retail-based strategies such as increasing the minimum purchase age from 18 to 21 and prohibiting retailers near schools from selling tobacco.
Cigarette trafficking in five northeastern U.S. cities – Tobacco Control. The study found that 58.7% of randomly collected cigarette packs in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Providence, and Washington, DC did not have a proper local tax stamp. These five cities could recoup $680–729 million annually in cigarette tax revenue if cigarette trafficking was eliminated. To read more, click here.

In particular, the “Cigarette Tax Increases by State per Year” factsheet was updated to include Oregon’s tax increase implemented on January 1, 2014.

Proposed cigarette tax increase in Florida sparking debate on the First Coast (FL) – First Coast News. The state of Florida last raised cigarette taxes in 2009. Now, the same lawmaker, State Representative Jim Waldman is proposing adding a dollar surcharge to each pack of cigarettes sold. Waldman says adding the surcharge would generate an estimated $838 million a year and would offset costs to scale back motor vehicle registration fees.

China increases average purchase price of tobacco by 5 percent (China) – Reuters. China’s top planning authority, the National Development and Reform Commission (NRDC), and China National Tobacco Corporation, the state-owned cigarette monopoly, will raise the average purchase price of flue-cured tobacco by 5%. Flue-cured tobacco accounts for more than 90% of China's tobacco crop. China is home to more than 300 million smokers, and the country's powerful state-backed tobacco company has opposed measures in the past.
