Altria wins appeals court ruling in New York smokers case (NY)Bloomberg News. The New York Court of Appeals ruled that under New York state law smokers may not force Philip Morris USA to pay for tests that would provide early detection of lung cancer. The court ruled that the state does not recognize a right to medical monitoring for smokers who are not yet sick.

Deal reached on tobacco firm corrective statementsAssociated Press. Tobacco companies and the federal government have reached an agreement on publishing corrective statements that say the companies lied about the dangers of smoking and requiring the companies to disclose smoking’s health effects. Under the agreement with the U.S. Justice Department, the companies must publish full-page ads in the Sunday editions of 35 newspapers and on the newspapers’ websites, as well as air prime-time TV spots on CBS, ABC or NBC five times per week for a year. U.S. consumers will likely have to wait until 2015 or later to see a court-ordered advertising blitz detailing tobacco companies' deception, a lag of nine years after the original ruling. Tobacco lawyers said that they planned to push forward with an appeal about the wording of the ads, even after they struck an agreement this month with the Justice Department.
