Tobacco-Related Disparities in Specific Populations
Research
The effects of a tobacco intervention on binge drinking among African American light smokers – Journal of Addictive Diseases. This study assessed the effects of a smoking cessation counseling intervention on drinking habits of a sample of 755 African American smokers. Cessation counseling was significantly associated with a reduction in past 30-day binge drinking prevalence at week 8, though these results diminished within 6 months. Similarly, smoking cessation was associated with less binge drinking at week 8 but not at 6 months.
Trends in smoking among adults with mental illness and association between mental health treatment and smoking cessation – JAMA. An analysis of nationally representative survey data taken from 2004-2011 from multiple sources concluded that adjusted smoking rates declined significantly among individuals without mental illness, but no statistically significant change was observed among those with mental illness. The researchers suggest that tobacco control policies and cessation interventions targeting the general population have not worked as effectively for persons with mental illness.
