Beliefs associated with intention to ban smoking in households with smokers
A recently published article examines barriers in instituting household smoking bans and identifies beliefs related to smoking bans in households with smokers and children. Researchers from the Annenberg Public Policy Center conducted a telephone survey guided by the reasoned action model to assess the attitudes, norms, and self-efficacy/control predictors associated with prohibitions on household smoking. Results of the study show 47% of households reported a high intention to not allow household smoking, and attitudes, norms and self-efficacy were all associated with this intention. The study findings indicate that messages to motivate smokers to implement restrictions on smoking in private homes should focus on health effects of secondhand smoke on children, contrast the rights of smokers with health effects, and suggest alternate locations for smoking. Reports
New recommendations regarding health communication interventions to reduce tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure from the Community Preventive Services Task Force
The Community Preventive Services Task Force has updated recommendations regarding mass-reach health communication interventions to reduce tobacco use. The recommendations are based on results from 64 studies that evaluated interventions using television as the sole or primary media channel. The recommendations state that the evidence is strong for the effectiveness of mass-reach health communication interventions in decreasing the prevalence of tobacco use; increasing cessation and use of available services such as quitlines; and decreasing initiation of tobacco use among young people. The report updates two previous Task Force findings, and also includes a summary of the literature on cost effectiveness and cost-benefit as well as considerations for implementation.
