Oregon lawmakers debate e-cigarette taxes (OR)
The Oregon House and Senate committees have begun to discuss the introduction of a tax on e-cigarettes. The legislature recently heard from the Department of Revenue regarding the lack of a state tax on e-cigarettes. Representative Phil Barnhart (D-OR) has said the state should consider a tax on e-cigarettes, as these products carry addictive nicotine, and a tax could increase tax revenue for Oregon. Currently, e-cigarettes do not fall under tobacco taxation laws in 49 states. Click here to read more.

Millions of children would benefit from President's plan to expand early education with tobacco tax increase, new report shows
A new report details the educational and health benefits of President Barack Obama’s proposal to expand early childhood education with funds from a federal tobacco tax increase. The report titled “Raising Smart, Healthy Kids in Every State” outlines the national and state benefits of a $0.94 increase in the federal cigarette tax to fund expanded early childhood education. The tax increase would provide nearly 335,000 additional low- and moderate-income families with access to preschool programs in the first year. In addition, the tax increase would prevent 1.7 million kids from becoming smokers and save nearly one million Americans from premature, smoking-caused death over time. Public health organizations behind the report include the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and American Academy of Pediatrics.
