Secondhand smoke exposure and smoking behavior among young adult bar patrons
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health sheds light on the secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among young adults in bars in San Diego, California and Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Randomized time-location samples of bar attendees aged 18 to 26 were administered cross-sectional surveys that asked about smoking habits and SHS exposure. Over 80% of subjects reported SHS exposure within the previous seven days, and more than 70% reported SHS exposure at a bar. Current smokers were more likely to have been exposed to SHS in other settings such as cars and homes, while current SHS exposure was found to be associated with greater smoking initiation susceptibility in nonsmokers. The authors suggest that stricter regulation of smoking in bars and in outdoor bar areas in comprehensive smoke-free policies and education about the harms of SHS exposure may reduce tobacco use among young adults. Impact of environmental tobacco smoke on children with asthma, United States, 2003-2010
A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with the United States Public Health Service examined data on nonsmoking children with asthma from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Researchers found that 53.3% of children with asthma were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) as determined by serum cotinine levels. Correlations were observed between ETS exposure and a number of adverse outcomes, including increased healthcare visits and limited activity due to wheezing and disturbed sleep. Even very low serum cotinine levels were associated with risks. The high prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure among children with asthma reinforces the continued need to reduce ETS exposure in order to prevent poor health outcomes.
