Awareness, perceptions and use of snus among young adults from the upper Midwest region of the USATobacco Control. A regional sample of 2,607 young adults (ages 20-28) in Minnesota determined that the majority of young adults (64.8%) were aware of snus, and that 14.5% had used snus. More young adults in the sample (17.3%) than the overall U.S. adult population believed that snus is less harmful than cigarettes.

Hookah use among adolescents in the United States: Results of a national surveyNicotine & Tobacco Research. Cross-sectional, nationally representative data of adolescents from the 2011 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) found that 7.3% of U.S. adolescents use hookah. Living with hookah users and use of other alternative tobacco products (ATPs), but not current cigarette use, were associated with current hookah use.

In a recent interview, Centers for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden voiced his concern about the impact that electronic cigarettes and flavored little cigars might have due to looser advertising and tax regulations on those products compared to cigarettes. "I really worry about our kids," Frieden said. "If the next generation gets hooked, you're talking about a lifetime struggle with addiction."

Ranking members warn of dangers of e-cigarette advertisingCommittee on Energy and Commerce. Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman, Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette, and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., sent a letter to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg warning that electronic cigarette companies are targeting young smokers with the same advertising and marketing practices that major cigarette companies used for decades to hook teen smokers. The writers state that e-cigarette companies have demonstrated that they are not capable of self-regulation and call on FDA to take action in regulating e-cigarettes.
