Tobacco retailers more prevalent in low-income neighborhoods (NY)
The New York State Department of Health recently released a study that assessed the association between the density of tobacco retail locations and sociodemographic characteristics of neighborhoods throughout the state. Results of the study indicate that tobacco retailer density is higher in areas with a larger proportion of minority and low-income residents. The report was authored by the State Department of Health’s (DOH) Bureau of Tobacco Control. Findings from the study point to a need to focus on policy measures to reduce the density of tobacco retailers to reduce health disparities. National Native Network releases commercial tobacco prevention guide
The National Native Network released “Promising Practices for Commercial Tobacco Prevention & Control in Indian Country,” a report that aims to guide Native American communities in the United States and Canada in their efforts to reduce commercial tobacco use. American Indians and Alaska Natives currently have the highest rates of commercial tobacco use compared to all other U.S. populations. Authors of the report hope the guide will increase awareness regarding effective tobacco cessation programs and tobacco control policies in the Native American population. Video: "Becoming Tobacco Free"
A five-minute video to help smokers who have been diagnosed with serious mental illnesses was created by New York State Office of Mental Health in partnership with Columbia’s Center for Practice Innovations (CPI), NYC Health Department, and Dr. Jill Williams. The video features clips of consumers discussing their journey to becoming tobacco free, the health benefits of quitting, tools to help think through the pros and cons of quitting, what to expect when quitting, and how to get help.
