Webinar - Palliative Care versus Harmful Exposure: Secondhand Medical Marijuana Smoke in Multi-Unit Housing

Along with the rising number of states that have adopted statutes permitting the use of medical marijuana under certain circumstances, there has been an increase in questions about how these laws affect smoke-free policies for multi-unit residential properties. This webinar, presented by the Public Health Law Center, will review the interplay between medical marijuana laws and policies addressing secondhand smoke in private, market-rate, federally subsidized public housing, and Section 8 properties. The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the American Lung Association are conducting a webinar to discuss the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), its impact on local health departments, and provisions related to tobacco prevention and cessation. Speakers will highlight final rules recently released in February on tobacco cessation coverage and the tobacco surcharge, which allows for different insurance premium rates for tobacco users and non-users. Webinar: Tobacco Education for Oral Health Providers

The National Association of Community Health Centers and Break Free Alliance are providing a free webinar to assist oral health providers in tackling the challenges of addressing smoking cessation with their patients. The webinar will feature presenter Jill Loewen, RDA, BS, MS, CTTS, with the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, and was designed to help health providers define their role in addressing tobacco use; understand the impact of tobacco use on community health center patients; describe the steps involved for treating tobacco use; and identify additional resources for helping patients quit tobacco use. The session focuses on tobacco use and its impact on oral health, the types of tobacco products on the market, and how dental health personnel can implement a tobacco dependence treatment service in the dental practice. 6th Annual Preparing for the 7th Generation Conference

American Indian Tribes and the state of Oklahoma are working together and sharing resources to host the Preparing for the 7th Generation conference to reduce the death and disease associated with commercial tobacco use and addiction. The unique collaboration between these groups considers the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations so they no longer have to suffer the consequences of commercial tobacco abuse experienced today. At this conference, attendees will learn about the impact of commercial tobacco abuse in American Indian communities, tobacco control strategies that are working in Indian Country and how to collaborate more closely with tribal organizations to more effectively address tobacco-related disparities. Getting Started at Point of Sale Training Institute

This training opportunity from the Counter Tools team at the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be engaging and interactive, including both classroom and in-store sessions on the importance of the tobacco retail environment, how to do store assessments and what to measure, and how to use mapping effectively in tobacco control. After the training, participants will have access to the Counter Tools Store Audit Center software through summer 2013 for use in their home communities, and can take part in weekly follow up technical assistance calls. Summit on Tobacco Policy II

The National Center for Tobacco Policy and Captain Jose Belardo and his staff at Region VII, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are co-sponsoring a reprise of last year’s successful Summit on Tobacco Policy. Like its predecessor, Summit II will bring together those with experience in tobacco-free campus policy with those considering, or in the process of implementing, such a policy. Most sessions will be plenary and registrations will be limited to create an atmosphere of informality and sharing. The Summit brings together people with different perspectives and experiences to engage with one another about how to help organizations make open space policies work. UCSF/Legacy Tobacco Documents Workshop

The University of California, San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education is conducting a one-day workshop on using tobacco industry documents for advocacy. Topics covered at this workshop include: introduction to tobacco industry documents databases, hand-on practice searching and extracting key industry documents; examples of ways documents can be of use to promote tobacco-free communities; and opportunities to network and brainstorm with top documents researchers and other advocates. APPEAL Policy Team Leadership Summit

Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL) is hosting a Leadership Team Summit where Partners will be asked to apply as regional “teams” of 4-5 people. These leadership teams could be comprised of an existing leader, emerging leader, faith-based leader, youth, and someone who has knowledge of tobacco or healthy eating / active living (HEAL) in Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. “Teams” will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and should include those from a particular geographic region (e.g. state, city, multistate that is within a geographic area such as the Northeast or Southwest, etc.). Teams will be trained to advance their leadership skills to achieve health parity in HEAL or tobacco issues in their community. Details coming soon!
