Former Surgeon General joins NJOY's board
E-cigarette manufacturer NJOY has announced that former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona will join the company’s scientific advisory committee. Carmona was the 17th U.S. Surgeon General from 2002-2006 during the Bush Administration, and was known for his 2006 report on the health effects of secondhand smoke. Carmona’s role at the company will be to advise on public health and regulatory issues and to lead NJOY’s research on e-cigarettes and harm reduction. According to an industry analyst, the move could be a step toward the e-cigarette industry’s hope of overtaking cigarette sales with the popularization of e-cigarettes. Read more here.

Report - Not your grandfather's cigar: A new generation of cheap & sweet cigars threatens a new generation of kids
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids released a new report on the changing landscape of cigars. Topics addressed in the report include the wide array of cigar products on the market, trends in use and sales, marketing of cigars, health harms, how cigars and cigarettes have been manipulated to avoid regulation and taxation, and the need for regulation and adequate taxation of cigars. The report notes that cigar sales have doubled since 2000 and teens smoke cigars at twice the rate of adults.
