Depressive symptoms among heavy cigarette smokers: The influence of daily rate, gender, and race
Researchers from the University of Mississippi Medical Center examined depressive symptoms among heavy smokers and the role of moderating factors including smoking status, gender, and race. Researchers examined data on 6,158 highly nicotine-dependent, cigarette smokers and measured for depressive symptoms and demographic data. Results of the study show higher levels of symptoms of depression among smokers as compared to nonsmokers, with differences among race and gender subgroups. This study adds to a growing body of evidence indicating the influence of tobacco on depressive symptoms among heavy smokers. Click here to read the study abstract in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
