Tobacco industry monitoring database
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a database on its website dedicated to tobacco industry monitoring. This database contains articles that are publicly available on Internet sources such as news outlets, wire services, and news releases. The articles’ content is related to the tobacco industry, groups, and individuals who support the tobacco industry’s interests. The database is continuously updated and searchable by country, topic, date, keyword, and tobacco company; however, it is not comprehensive and only includes English-language articles. Sales of e-cigarettes continue to soar
Electronic cigarette sales have doubled in the past two years to $300 million in 2012, and are on target to surpass traditional cigarette consumption in the next decade. Traditional cigarette sales and consumption are declining due to rising tobacco taxes and the increased number of public places that are becoming smoke-free. E-cigarette companies are spending large amounts on marketing and advertising in the U.S. and the United Kingdom to promote e-cigarettes as an alternative to cigarettes. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes has been attributed to this aggressive advertising, and the industry may soon face regulations that could impede this growth. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as the agency appointed to regulate tobacco products in the U.S., is investigating the public health effects of e-cigarettes, and the agency’s findings could lead to further regulation of the products.
