Public Workshop: "Third Party Governance of Industry-Sponsored Tobacco Product Research"

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products (FDA-CTP) is hosting a public workshop to discuss the recommendation made by an Institute of Medicine report which recommends that sponsors of Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) applications use independent third parties to undertake one or more key functions in tobacco product research. Also known as third party governance, the FDA is considering this idea as it relates more generally to tobacco research. Scientific and medical experts; other interested participants from academia, public health organizations, federal, state and local government agencies, independent research organizations, contract research organizations, and the tobacco industry; and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend. Kick Butts Day

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is planning for the best and biggest Kick Butts Day yet. Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Teachers, youth leaders, and health advocates can organize events to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free, and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco. The Kick Butts Day website, www.kickbuttsday.org, has been redesigned to make it even easier to participate in Kick Butts Day. The site includes step-by-step directions to plan a Kick Butts Day event or activity, register an event (so that CTFK can help promote it), as well as new information to make the KBD website a year-round resource for youth advocates fighting tobacco. Webinar: Palliative Care versus Harmful Exposure: Secondhand Medical Marijuana Smoke in Multi-Unit Housing

Along with the rising number of states that have adopted statutes permitting the use of medical marijuana under certain circumstances has been an increase in questions about how these laws affect smoke-free policies for multi-unit residential properties. This webinar will review the interplay between medical marijuana laws and policies addressing secondhand smoke in private, market-rate, federally subsidized public housing, and Section 8 properties. Getting Started at Point of Sale Training Institute

This training opportunity from the Counter Tools team at the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be engaging and interactive, including both classroom and in-store sessions on the importance of the tobacco retail environment, how to do store assessments and what to measure, and how to use mapping effectively in tobacco control.
