National Prevention Week 2013
May 12-18, 2013
National Prevention Week is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)-supported annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. This observance is an opportunity to join with other individuals, organizations, and coalitions in your community to promote prevention efforts, educate others about behavioral health issues, and create and strengthen community partnerships. During the inaugural National Prevention Week in 2012, community organizations across the country hosted health fairs, block parties, educational assemblies, town hall meetings, memorial walks, social media campaigns, and outdoor events. Thousands of people attended these events and helped to raise awareness about the importance of substance abuse prevention and the promotion of mental health. The theme for May 12th is Prevention and Cessation of Tobacco Use. Learn more here.

Webinar - Smokescreens and the Silver Screen: Smoking in the Media

Presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence, this webinar will focus on the influence of smoking imagery on children and evidence for smoking initiation. Different types of media will be covered, as well as strategies to discuss the impact of smoking imagery with children, adolescents, and families in a pediatric clinical setting. Featured presenters include Jim Sargent, MD, FAAP of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP, of the Children's Medical Group in Atlanta. UCSF/Legacy Tobacco Documents Workshop

The University of California, San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education is conducting a one-day workshop on using tobacco industry documents for advocacy. Topics covered at this workshop include: introduction to tobacco industry documents databases, hand-on practice searching and extracting key industry documents; examples of ways documents can be of use to promote tobacco-free communities; and opportunities to network and brainstorm with top documents researchers and other advocates. Getting Started at Point of Sale Training Institute

This training opportunity from the Counter Tools team at the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be engaging and interactive, including both classroom and in-store sessions on the importance of the tobacco retail environment, how to do store assessments and what to measure, and how to use mapping effectively in tobacco control. After the training, participants will have access to the Counter Tools Store Audit Center software through summer 2013 for use in their home communities, and can take part in weekly follow up technical assistance calls. Space is limited, and the registration deadline is May 1, 2013. World No Tobacco Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health partners have designated every May 31 as World No Tobacco Day. This day will be an opportunity to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for more effective policies to reduce tobacco use. The theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.” Evidence shows that banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is both effective in reducing tobacco use and cost-effective. Summit on Tobacco Policy II

The National Center for Tobacco Policy and Captain Jose Belardo and his staff at Region VII, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are co-sponsoring a reprise of last year’s successful Summit on Tobacco Policy. Like its predecessor, Summit II will bring together those with experience in tobacco-free campus policy with those considering, or in the process of implementing, such a policy. Most sessions will be plenary and registrations will be limited to create an atmosphere of informality and sharing. The Summit brings together people with different perspectives and experiences to engage with one another about how to help organizations make open space policies work. Promising Practices to Promote Tobacco-Free Active Living and Healthy Eating in Low Socioeconomic Status Communities
