Request for information on adopting smoke-free policies in PHAs and multifamily housing
The Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) is requesting comments from the public on how it can support the implementation of smoke-free policies in public house and multifamily housing. HUD is asking for feedback from the general public and stakeholders such as resident councils, advocacy groups, and housing providers that have interest in smoke-free policies. HUD is also looking for best practices and strategies on implementing these policies. Click here for more information, including instructions for submitting comments. FDA Announcements

Updated tobacco retailer education self-mailer available from FDA
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products (FDA-CTP) recently updated the Break the Chain of Tobacco Addiction Retailer Education Campaign self-mailer. The self-mailer provides retailers with an easy-to-read summary of the federal tobacco laws, as well as CTP contact information. It is available in English and Spanish, and can be downloaded or ordered from FDA-CTP’s clearinghouse of materials. Click here to read more.

States awarded FDA tobacco retail inspection contracts
Since 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has awarded funds to states and U.S. territories as part of ongoing efforts to expand its Tobacco Retail Inspection Program. This program was created to enable states and territories to inspect tobacco retailers’ compliance with federal youth access and advertising regulations. It is FDA’s goal to establish a contract with as many states and U.S. Territories as possible. FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) currently has contracts with 44 states and territories to conduct inspections, and expects additional awards to be made in the future. Call for nominations: FDA-CTP's Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products is currently accepting nominations for new voting members of the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC). The TPSAC reviews and evaluates safety, dependence, and health issues relating to tobacco products and provides advisement to the Commissioner of Food and Drugs on the regulation of tobacco. The full notice and instructions for submitting nominations are available here. The deadline for nominations is December 4, 2012.
