The vector of the tobacco epidemic: Tobacco industry practices in low and middle-income countries
A new systematic review has examined transnational tobacco companies’ (TTCs) practices which are aimed at blocking tobacco control policies and promoting tobacco use in low and middle-income countries. The systematic review revealed four main themes to TTCs’ strategies, including economic activity, marketing/promotion, political activity, and deceptive/manipulative activity. The authors conclude that TTCs have utilized similar strategies across high, middle, and low-income countries, and governments and health professionals must fully understand tobacco industry practices in order to counter them. "A Deadly Alliance" report: How Big Tobacco and convenience stores partner to market tobacco products and fight life-saving policies
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the American Heart Association have collaborated on a new report called “A Deadly Alliance: How Big Tobacco and convenience stores partner to market tobacco products and fight lifesaving policies.” This report details the aggressive concentration of tobacco marketing at the point of sale and its impact on tobacco use, especially among kids. This report also discusses tobacco companies’ mobilization of convenience stores and other tobacco retailers in opposing policy changes like tobacco taxes and limits to tobacco marketing at the point of sale. The report’s findings can be used at the state and local level to draw attention to the problem of tobacco use in general, and particularly to the role that convenience stores and tobacco companies play in exacerbating the problem. NATO announces initiative to combat local ordinances
The National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) has launched an initiative that will require tobacco retailers throughout the United States to become involved in local politics. This initiative has been created in order to fight local ordinances that allow localities to restrict tobacco advertising and promotion, prohibit the sale of certain cigar package sizes, ban the sale of tobacco at various retail stores, ban the sale of flavored tobacco, and enact smoke-free policies.
