FDA Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting

As part of the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee’s (TPSAC) required report to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the committee will continue discussing issues related to the nature and impact of the use of dissolvable tobacco products on the public health, including such use among children. Discussion will include such topics as the composition and characteristics of dissolvable tobacco products, product use, potential health effects, and marketing. TPSAC is accepting comments from the public on a DRAFT summary of its report on dissolvable tobacco products that will be discussed at this TPSAC meeting. Click here to view the draft report. Release of Surgeon General's Report: Preventing Tobacco Use among Youth and Young Adults

The release date for the new Surgeon General’s Report on Preventing Tobacco Use among Youth and Young Adults is scheduled for Thursday, March 8, 2012 at a press release in Washington, DC. To promote the launch, CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health will be webcasting the event live, and more information will be provided closer to the release date. Also available will be Facebook and Twitter materials, a PSA with youth-focused messages featuring the Surgeon General and youth, a consumer guide, the full report and more.

17th Annual Kick Butts Day

Organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kick Butts Day is a day of activism designed to empower youth across the country and around the world to raise awareness about the problems of tobacco use and take action against Big Tobacco. Visit the Kick Butts Day website to download the 2012 activity guide, access promotional materials and gear, and get ideas for an activity. Kick Butts Day is less than a month away, and hundreds of events have been registered. Event organizers are encouraged to “get on the map” and register their events on the KBD website so that the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids staff can offer their support in planning and promoting KBD events, and to be recognized alongside other KBD events taking place across the country.

8th annual National LGBTQ Health Equity Summit - Bridging the Gap: Promising Practices in LGBT Health and Tobacco Control

As an official ancillary meeting to the National Conference on Tobacco or Health, the summit will address promising practices in both LGBT health and tobacco control. The goal of this event is to give participants tools and strategies to strengthen and advance their movements in their own communities. A broad group of individuals from all areas of health equity, LGBT advocacy, and tobacco control are expected to attend, including seasoned and emerging leaders, community activists, Federal and state health department employees, and policymakers. Registration for the summit is now open, and conference abstracts are being accepted through March 19, 2012. The Network for LGBT Health Equity is seeking applications from youth aged 16-24 to be a part of the Summit Youth Planning Committee. NCTOH pre-conference workshops from the Multi-State Collaborative for Health Systems Change

The Multi-State Collaborative for Health Systems Change will hold two pre-conference workshops in conjunction with the National Conference on Tobacco or Health. Invited guests and speakers will include representatives from healthcare delivery systems that work, Medicaid and private insurers, Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services, HHS/Office of the National Coordinator, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Morning Workshop: Yes, Systems in Healthcare Work! Components of an effective system in healthcare to reduce tobacco use will be presented, along with the real-world impact of systems implemented in two dozen public hospitals, clinics and community health centers. National leaders will update us on what's driving change. Participants will join a discussion of how tobacco control programs and healthcare can partner effectively in a rapidly changing environment. Afternoon Workshop: Yes, Use of Cessation Benefits Leads to Health Improvement and Rapid ROI Join in a dialogue with public and private insurers and tobacco control programs on improving cessation benefits and increasing utilization. Participants will take away new information on how to increase benefit use and lower healthcare costs in the short-run.
