Journal of Environmental and Public Health special issue on tobacco use patterns
In May 2012, the Journal of Environmental and Public Health will publish a special issue on Tobacco Use Patterns. Topics will include concurrent use of multiple tobacco products (polytobacco use, dual use), increase in the number of intermittent smokers, and disparities in tobacco use. The Journal of Environmental and Public Health is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles, review articles, and clinical studies in all areas of environmental and public health. Building healthy communities: Action planning for tobacco prevention and control
This report highlights the efforts of sites that participated in tobacco prevention and control coalition capacity-building assistance from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH). Additionally, the report outlines the role of local health departments (LHDs) and local boards of health (LBOHs) and provides details about evidence-based tobacco prevention and control. The information presented in the report should aid LHDs and LBOHs in designing new or enhancing existing tobacco prevention and control programs; assist LHDs and LBOHs in identifying additional resources and peer assistance options to develop and implement tobacco prevention and control programs; and contribute to a greater understanding of the benefits of this type of planning among LHDs’ and LBOHs’ community partners and other national organizations. The University of Wisconsin and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have assessed the overall health of almost all counties in the U.S. based on factors that influence health, including smoking. IOM report calls for increased national focus on prevention, public health
Echoing widespread concern about the escalating cost of healthcare and the nation’s standing behind other countries in health outcomes, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a new report calling for significant reforms to refocus America’s health system toward prevention of the chronic diseases that are taking a toll on the nation’s health and economy.
