FDA Announcements
Obama administration takes action to address tobacco epidemic; FDA takes two significant actions
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products announced that it has released two draft guidance documents as part of the agency's implementation of provisions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. One document provides guidance on how companies will comply with the requirement to report on the quantities of potentially harmful chemicals (HPHCs) in tobacco products. FDA has established a list of 93 HPHCs that tobacco companies must report for every regulated tobacco product sold in the U.S., but currently tobacco companies only need to test for 20 HPHCs. The other document provides guidance to companies that seek to advertise or market a tobacco product as less harmful or associated with reducing the risk of tobacco-related disease.
