Effects of physical activity on teen smoking cessation activity
A recent study suggests that adding a physical activity component to smoking cessation programs may enhance cessation success in teenagers. Researchers studied 233 West Virginia teenagers ages fourteen to nineteen who were randomly placed in either a smoking cessation program with a physical activity component or just a cessation program. The results show that teenagers placed in the cessation program with a physical activity component had significantly higher 7-day point prevalence quit rates at both 3 months and at 6 months, compared to those placed in a regular cessation program. New study shows significant rise in cigar use among young adults
Cigar use has increased among the young adult population, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers conducted a secondary data analysis on results from the 2002 through 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to determine cigar use among adults ages 18 to 25 by racial/ethnic group and brand. The results show that cigar use increased to 12.7% in 2008 from 12.0% in 2002 in white men ages 18 to 25. Researchers also identified sociodemographic and other predictors of use of the top five most popular cigar brands. The authors believe that recent tobacco control legislation may have affected cigar consumption, and more research should be done to improve the accuracy of cigar use estimates. Youth drug use in Indiana: Upward trend in smokeless tobacco (IN)
New research from Indiana University has revealed that smokeless tobacco use among twelfth graders living in Indiana is increasing. Lifetime use of smokeless tobacco increased 4.2% between 2007 and 2011. The researchers express concern over this upward trend because smokeless tobacco use exposes youth to carcinogens and negatively impacts health. The researchers stress the importance of reminding children and young adults that smokeless tobacco products are dangerous to their health. Read more here, or access the full report here.
