Interpretations of cigarette advertisement warning labels by Philadelphia Puerto Ricans
In a recent study, researchers interviewed Puerto Ricans living in Philadelphia to examine their understanding of and reactions to the new graphic health warnings mandated by federal law to go into effect in 2012. The research was conducted in a naturalistic environment through in-home family focus groups. The findings revealed that there was a variety of interpretations of the health messages among the respondents. The researchers comment that the study’s specific recruitment of Puerto Ricans addresses the problem of inaccuracies resulting from the aggregation of data on Latino subgroups into one group, and note that health messages such as the new graphic health warnings should be tested for effectiveness among different racial and ethnic subgroups.
