    The Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) and its sister organization, the Diabetes Training and Technical Assistance Center (DTTAC) will be exhibiting at the APHA Annual Meeting. Meeting attendees can visit booth #2116 to learn more about tobacco control and diabetes prevention training opportunities with DTTAC and TTAC.
     
  • Bringing Tobacco Use Survey Data to Life: The Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey
    The Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) survey of tobacco use and policy information that has been administered triennially as part of the U.S. Census Bureau's and Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Population Survey since 1992. TUS-CPS data are available for public use, and because it uses a large, nationally representative sample, the TUS-CPS is a key source of national, state, and local-level data on smoking, other tobacco use, and policy. At the APHA conference, NCI will host a formal meet the expert session and informal demonstrations on how to access and use the data. Click here for more details.

Webinar: To smoke or not to smoke: That is the adolescent's question

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) is pleased to announce its next free webinar, scheduled for November 1 at 2:00-3:30 pm ET. Attendees will learn how societal and developmental factors impact smoking initiation, continuation, and cessation; gain an understanding of the relationship between adolescent decision-making and smoking behavior; and be able to identify effective adolescent-focused tobacco intervention practices that utilize a developmental framework. The presenter will be Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, University of California, San Francisco. Click here to register. FDA is postponing the Tobacco Product Scientific Advisory (TPSAC) meeting scheduled for November 2-3, 2011 because key participants were unavailable due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts. A new meeting date will be announced in the Federal Register. Click here to read about the postponement.

Webinar: Regulating non-cigarette tobacco products more effectively

This webinar, scheduled for November 2 at 12:00 - 1:30 pm ET, is the first in the Public Health Policy Change series, sponsored by the Public Health Law Center. Cigarette manufacturers and other businesses are moving aggressively to develop, test, and market many non-cigarette commercial tobacco products, hoping to capitalize on declining cigarette use and to exploit loopholes in regulations written with cigarettes in mind. This webinar will describe some of these "other tobacco products," discuss gaps in regulation, and point out steps that local and state health departments can take to regulate these products. Webinar: Helping Patients Quit: Implementing the Joint Commission Tobacco Measure Set in Your Hospital

Hospitalization provides an opportunity to assist tobacco users with quitting. With Partnership for Prevention funding, The Joint Commission has developed a new set of performance measures to address the assessment and treatment of tobacco dependence for all hospitalized patients. This new measure set will be available for hospital selection in January 2012. Partnership for Prevention is hosting this educational webinar for the ActionToQuit Network and other tobacco control leaders and advocates nationwide. The program will feature a synopsis of The Joint Commission measure set; Massachusetts General Hospital’s experience in tobacco screening and intervention; and an overview of the newly released Helping Patients Quit guide. Webinar: Emerging Tobacco Retailer Policies
November 8, 2011
Join the Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing (the Center), a project of the American Lung Association in California, and the Technical Assistance Legal Center (TALC), a project of Public Health Law & Policy, for a webinar on November 8 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. ET. The webinar will go beyond the basics of local tobacco retailer licensing ordinances and detail the emerging policy options that can be “plugged-in” to a basic licensing ordinance. These policy options include prohibiting sales of tobacco products near schools, restricting the individual sale of little cigars and cigarillos, limiting licenses based on density and several others. Presenters will talk about the benefits and policy considerations of these innovative policies, and community representatives will share stories about implementation in the field.
