Five years later: A look at tobacco control in Florida (FL)
In conjunction with the fifth anniversary of the Florida Department of Health’s establishment of the Tobacco Free Florida (TFF) program in 2006, TFF issued a press release highlighting its major accomplishments. The prevalence of smoking among adults has decreased by 18.6% between 2007 and 2010, and $4.2 billion in personal healthcare expenditures have been saved. TFF combines tobacco cessation, education and prevention to protect Florida residents from the harms of tobacco use. Dr. Frank Farmer, the Florida State Surgeon General says that the results from the program show that comprehensive tobacco control programs work. Electronic nicotine delivery systems: Adult use and awareness of the 'e-cigarette' in the USA
Although there is concern about the negative health impacts of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), little is known about awareness and use of e-cigarettes among the adult population. Researchers analyzed survey data from 2009 and 2010 to determine adults’ awareness and the prevalence of e-cigarette use. The results, published in the journal Tobacco Control, showed that awareness of e-cigarettes increased from 16.4% in 2009 to 32.2% in 2010, and usage increased from 0.6% in 2009 to 2.7% in 2010. Because of the increased awareness and use of the products, authors suggest that e-cigarettes should be monitored. Click here to read more.
