AAP Tobacco Consortium now seeking new member nominations
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Tobacco Consortium is now seeking nominations for new consortium members. Members of the consortium explore cutting edge research and synthesis of the literature on child and adolescent tobacco control and prevention. Consortium activities also include in-person meetings and publications and presentations at national professional meetings on child health and tobacco control. Nominees may be AAP members or nonmembers with an interest in scientific research in child and adolescent tobacco prevention and control. Health Promotion Practice journal supplement: Training and technical assistance: Lessons learned to sustain social norm changes in tobacco control
The Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) collaborated with Legacy and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) to publish the November theme issue of Health Promotion Practice (HPP), highlighting successful technical assistance and training models to support and sustain the reduction in tobacco use in the United States. In addition to thoughtful perspectives on best and promising practices, the issue includes an interview with Dr. Ursula Bauer, Director, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and commentaries that reflect on lessons learned in the tobacco control movement. Preventing Chronic Disease Student Research Paper Contest
Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) has announced its 2012 Student Research Contest, which provides a forum for students to develop their research skills and publish their results.PCD is a peer-reviewed electronic journal established to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in chronic disease prevention and health promotion. The contest aims to: recognize exceptional students in the field of chronic disease prevention and health promotion; encourage and promote scientific research and writing; and provide an opportunity for students to publish their work. National release of the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators
The Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators were launched on October 31 at the American Public Health Association annual meeting. Every ten years, the Healthy People initiative sets evidence-based goals and objectives designed to guide national health promotion and disease prevention efforts. Healthy People 2020 is comprised of 42 topic areas with nearly 600 objectives for improving Americans’ health over the next ten years; the Leading Health Indicators are a subset of the objectives, which have been chosen to represent high-priority health issues. FDA issues guidance for small businesses regarding compliance with required warnings for cigarette packages and advertisements
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products has released its final guidance document for small businesses regarding compliance with required graphic warnings for cigarette packages and advertisements. The document includes a summary of the relevant provisions of the Tobacco Control Act and a Question and Answer portion designed to help small businesses comply with the new regulations by the implementation date of September 22, 2012. Opportunity for comment: Proposed restrictions on the sale and distribution of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to protect children and adolescents
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products has posted a proposed rule amending the Agency's regulations to allow the manufacturer of a cigarette or smokeless tobacco product with a trade or brand name that is also the trade or brand name of a nontobacco product to continue to use the name if the tobacco product was sold in the U.S. on or before June 22, 2009. FDA further proposes to amend the regulations to ensure that a manufacturer of a cigarette or smokeless tobacco product may continue to use its trade or brand name even if that name is subsequently registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or subsequently used for a nontobacco product. FDA stings retailers for selling tobacco to minors
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products announced in November that it has issued warning letters to over 1,200 retail establishments, the majority of which were cited for violating regulations that prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors. Anyone can search FDA’s database of inspection reports to find out whether their local retailers have passed inspections, and take a pledge to support retailers that do not sell tobacco products to minors.
