World No Tobacco Day
May 31, 2011
World No Tobacco Day is a yearly celebration led by the World Health Organization to inform the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. The theme of this year’s event is “The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.” The commemoration of World No Tobacco Day will highlight the treaty's overall importance, stress Parties' obligations under the treaty, and promote the essential role of the Conference of the Parties and WHO in supporting countries' efforts to meet those obligations. Click here for more information. In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published an MMWR article that examines smoking prevalence, warning labels, and interest in quitting smoking among smokers in fourteen countries, and is disseminating messages about the publication and World No Tobacco Day via Twitter and Facebook; tobacco control advocates are encouraged to follow the these social media pages and repost the CDC’s messages to help spread the word.
