Diabetes and Tobacco: A Dangerous Combination Webinar

The National Latino Tobacco Control Network is holding a free webinar on April 11, 2011 at 2:00-3:00 pm EST, titled “Diabetes and Tobacco: A Dangerous Combination.” The session will highlight the prevalence and health effects of tobacco use for the general population, as well as for people with diabetes. It will also discuss tobacco as an independent risk factor for diabetes; benefits of quitting for people with diabetes; clinical guidelines for cessation and quitline services and other online resources; and policies and reimbursable services. The webinar will be led by Chandana Nandi and Jeannette Noltenius. Participants must register to participate in this webinar by contacting Jean Leroux at (317) 472-1055 from 8:00am to 4:30pm EST (Monday-Friday), or by emailing jleroux@indianalatino.com. The webinar will also be available on NLTCN's website for those who are unable to participate.
Tobacco Research Intensive Lecture Series

The Translational Tobacco Reduction Research (T2R2) program, a shared program of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and the West Virginia University Prevention Research Center, is once again sponsoring the Tobacco Research Intensive Lecture Series (TRILS). This series will feature nationally known experts presenting on Tobacco and Co-Occurring Health Risks and Disparities at West Virginia University's Health Sciences Center in Morgantown, West Virginia. The lectures are free and open to the public, and free CEUs will be offered in multiple disciplines. The theme for this year is "The New Face of Smokeless Tobacco Addiction." The conference will raise awareness of the dangers of smokeless tobacco products and broaden the national coalition of organizations, agencies, and individuals committed to reducing and eventually eliminating the use of smokeless and spit tobacco products. 18th Annual Nicotine Dependence Conference

The 18th Annual Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Conference offers a range of topics focusing on pharmacotherapy. The conference begins with a presentation about the neurobiology of addiction. Subsequent presentations include information about the pharmacology of - and drug interactions with - current FDA-approved medications for tobacco dependence treatment; and pharmacotherapy for non-cigarette products such as smokeless tobacco. Emphasis is placed on how to address challenges that practitioners currently face, such as treating cardiac patients, obstacles presented by rural communities, and barriers for surgical patients. Time is set aside for active discussion of topics, case studies and reflection. Participants can meet informally with Mayo Nicotine Dependence Center staff and other faculty members to discuss specific program and patient needs. World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day is a yearly celebration led by the World Health Organization to inform the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. The theme of this year’s event is “The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.” The commemoration of World No Tobacco Day will highlight the treaty's overall importance, stress Parties' obligations under the treaty, and promote the essential role of the Conference of the Parties and WHO in supporting countries' efforts to meet those obligations. NALBOH 2011 Annual Conference

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) will hold its 19th annual conference in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on September 7-9, 2011. The theme of the 2011 Annual NALBOH Conference is Public Health: Effective Governance, Strong Leadership, Engaged Citizens. Accordingly, the conference will provide attendees with information about public health governance, current public health issues, and the role of strong leadership and citizens engaged in improving the health of our communities. The purpose of this 3-day skills-building and strategy planning Institute is to enhance awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke, share recent science and economic data and first-hand experiences, and expand the capacity of smoke-free advocates, researchers, and other public health professionals nationwide. This year, the Institute will also feature stories about what went wrong in real-life smoke-free campaigns from smoke-free advocates who have learned lessons the hard way.
