Trends in smokeless tobacco use in the US workforce: 1987-2005
According to an article published in Tobacco Induced Diseases, smokeless tobacco use has not increased as workplace smoking restrictions have become more widespread in recent years. Researchers used survey results from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to determine if workplace smoking restrictions increased the use of smokeless tobacco products. The data show that there was no significant change in the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use overall from 1987-2005, and that workplace smoke-free policies were associated with lower prevalence of tobacco use. Blue collar workers and farm workers had the highest prevalence rates of smokeless tobacco use at 7.26% and 10.51%, respectively. Read the study here.
Does ADHD predict substance-use disorders? A 10-year follow-up study of young adults with ADHD
A new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry indicates that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a risk factor for the onset of cigarette smoking. Researchers followed a cohort of 268 adolescents with and without ADHD for ten years. At the ten-year follow-up, participants were assessed for substance-use disorders and cigarette smoking using structured diagnostic interviews. The results indicate that ADHD was a significant predictor for cigarette smoking. Read the abstract here.
