Summer Webinar Series – Addressing Tobacco Use in Correctional Facilities
August 16 and August 30, 2011
This summer, the Break Free Alliance is hosting a four-part webinar series to address tobacco use among correctional and post-correctional populations. The webinars instruct participants on how to implement tobacco cessation programming and comprehensive tobacco control policies in correctional settings, as well as link newly released inmates with community-based cessation resources. Public workshop: Scientific Evaluation of Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) Applications

The FDA Center for Tobacco Products (FDA-CTP) is holding a public workshop to discuss issues pertinent to the scientific evaluation of modified risk tobacco products (MRTPs). The workshop will feature five moderated panel discussions. Scientific and medical experts and other interested participants from academia, public health organizations, federal, state and local government agencies, consumer groups, and the tobacco industry are encouraged to attend. Registration is free and will be on a first-come, first-served basis through August 3. FDA will also provide a free, live webcast of the MRTP public workshop. NALBOH 2011 Annual Conference

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) will hold its 19th annual conference in September. The theme of the 2011 Annual NALBOH Conference is Public Health: Effective Governance, Strong Leadership, Engaged Citizens. Looking for the best tried and true strategies for winning a smoke-free effort in your city or state? The purpose of this 3-day skills-building and strategy planning Institute is to enhance awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke, share recent science and economic data and first-hand experiences, and expand the capacity of smoke-free advocates, researchers, and other public health professionals nationwide. This year, the Institute will also feature stories about what went wrong in real-life smoke-free campaigns from smoke-free advocates who have learned lessons the hard way. To apply for a partial scholarship, fill out the one-page scholarship request form in addition to the registration application. The conference will provide opportunities for participants to build global tobacco control capacity by sharing best practices, experiences, knowledge, research, and the latest trends; celebrating successes; renewing their commitment to fight the global tobacco epidemic; and networking for future collaborations. Promising Practices to Eliminate Tobacco-Related Disparities: The Power of Communities

The next Health Education Council and Break Free Alliance (BFA) national tobacco control conference will take place April 17-18, 2012 in New Orleans. This will be BFA's third national tobacco control conference that focuses its efforts on reducing the burden of tobacco use in low socioeconomic status and ethnic/minority populations. The call for abstracts is now open, and scholarship applications are being accepted. The deadline to submit an abstract or scholarship application is September 14, 2011.
