American Indians hit hardest by tobacco costs (CA)
According to a study released by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Health Policy Research, the average annual cost of smoking for American Indians living in California is $1,076. Researchers determined the cost by analyzing census figures, government health data and economic consequences of smoking. Approximately 20% of the 739,000 American Indians living in California currently smoke, but due to a lack of resources, many American Indians do not have access to the appropriate cessation support. The researchers suggest that Native communities should regulate tobacco advertisement, tobacco availability, and excise taxes and increase education on the importance of tobacco cessation.
