Do smokers of menthol cigarettes find it harder to quit smoking?
A recent systematic review shows that smokers of menthol cigarettes may have a more difficult time quitting smoking than those that smoke regular cigarettes. Researchers used electronic databases and reference lists to identify ten studies that examined cessation outcomes for menthol and non-menthol smokers. Of these ten studies, five found that menthol smoking was associated with lower chances of cessation. The association was strongest between menthol smoking and difficulty with cessation among racial/ethnic minorities and younger people, as well as in studies carried out after 1999. The authors call for additional research into these effects that also takes into consideration cigarette brand, socioeconomic status, and biomarkers of nicotine intake. CDC health disparities and inequalities report — United States, 2011
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released a new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Supplement detailing health disparities and inequalities related to a variety of health conditions and risk factors, including tobacco use. The cigarette smoking supplement uses data from the 2006-2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and the 1965-2008 National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) to identify tobacco-related disparities among different racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The report indicates that although there has been some progress in reducing racial/ethnic tobacco-related disparities, there has been less progress in reducing the disparity in smoking prevalence among people of low socioeconomic status. The authors recommend stronger, comprehensive tobacco control efforts aimed at preventing tobacco use among youth in order to eliminate disparities in the future.
