Inventing conflicts of interest: A history of tobacco industry tactics
An essay published in the January 2012 issue of the American Journal of Public Health describes how the tobacco industry created scientific controversy to diminish public health efforts and regulatory interventions against tobacco use. The author concludes that the tobacco industry’s strategy illustrates how effective skepticism can be at deflecting regulation, defending against litigation, and maintaining credibility despite data that proves otherwise. Three cigarette-makers raising prices for second time this year
Cigarette manufacturers Reynolds American, Altria, and Lorillard have increased their wholesale cigarette prices, signaling that the firms have strong pricing power. Reynolds American and Lorillard will increase prices across all of their cigarette brands, while Altria will raise the prices of fourteen brands. After only a few states enacted cigarette tax hikes this year, this is the second time in 2011 that the three companies have raised their prices; the companies also increased their wholesale prices in July.
