New report from Legacy on tobacco use and mental illness
Legacy has published a new report entitled "A Hidden Epidemic: Tobacco Use and Mental Illness." This report puts a spotlight on the issue of the high prevalence of tobacco use and nicotine dependence among people with mental illnesses and highlights barriers to effective tobacco cessation efforts to help people with mental illnesses quit. This publication also features examples of projects that demonstrate how organizations across America are addressing tobacco-related disparities faced by people with mental illnesses. These examples represent a broad range of tobacco prevention and cessation projects implemented by past Legacy grantees to deal with the issue of the high prevalence of tobacco use in this population. A PDF of the report is available online for free download here.
"No Community Left Behind": California's priority populations launch a new tobacco control initiative (CA)
Although California’s smoking prevalence data has shown an overall decrease in adult smoking rates, smoking remains more prevalent among African American and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) young adults. A new tobacco control initiative called ADEPT (Advocacy and Data dissemination to achieve Equity for Priority populations on Tobacco) will work to help these communities lower their smoking rates by raising awareness and understanding of the impact of tobacco use on vulnerable populations. Leaders of the initiative believe that it will empower these populations to lower their smoking rates and mobilize tobacco control program and policy initiatives. Click here for more details.
