Menthol - Science, Policy, and Advocacy Webinar

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center is partnering with Legacy to present a free webinar on May 5, 2011 at 1:00-2:30pm EDT that will discuss the science of menthol and its implications for policy and advocacy. The webinar will present the science behind the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee's (TPSAC) recommendation to the FDA that banning menthol in cigarettes would benefit public health as well as policies already in place and under development that address concerns about menthol and the impact of these policies on tobacco control. Key messages about the needs of tobacco dependence treatment for disparate populations will also be discussed. Click here to register for the webinar. National Summit on Smokeless & Spit Tobacco

The 6th National Summit Smokeless and Spit Tobacco is designed especially for professionals and advocates working in the field of smokeless tobacco use prevention and cessation. The theme for this year is "The New Face of Smokeless Tobacco Addiction." The conference will raise awareness of the dangers of smokeless tobacco products and broaden the national coalition of organizations, agencies, and individuals committed to reducing and eventually eliminating the use of smokeless and spit tobacco products. World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day is a yearly celebration led by the World Health Organization to inform the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. The theme of this year’s event is “The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.” The commemoration of World No Tobacco Day will highlight the treaty's overall importance, stress Parties' obligations under the treaty, and promote the essential role of the Conference of the Parties and WHO in supporting countries' efforts to meet those obligations. Conference and Webcast: The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act: Regulatory Science and the Tobacco Industry

This conference represents a unique opportunity for leaders of the nation’s tobacco control community to come together on the second anniversary of the signing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to discuss progress made and ways in which the tobacco control community can improve dialogue with the FDA to develop the regulatory science necessary to achieve Senator Kennedy’s vision of curbing tobacco use. The conference will also critically look at the tobacco industry’s response to the law and the challenges that exist in applying regulatory science to an industry that until two years ago was pre-empted from regulation under many major federal health and safety agencies. NALBOH 2011 Annual Conference

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) will hold its 19th annual conference in September. The theme of the 2011 Annual NALBOH Conference is Public Health: Effective Governance, Strong Leadership, Engaged Citizens. Accordingly, the conference will provide attendees with information about public health governance, current public health issues, and the role of strong leadership and citizens engaged in improving the health of our communities. Looking for the best tried and true strategies for winning a smoke-free effort in your city or state? The purpose of this 3-day skills-building and strategy planning Institute is to enhance awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke, share recent science and economic data and first-hand experiences, and expand the capacity of smoke-free advocates, researchers, and other public health professionals nationwide. This year, the Institute will also feature stories about what went wrong in real-life smoke-free campaigns from smoke-free advocates who have learned lessons the hard way.
