Cigarette sales drop 52 percent, but teens still at risk (IA)
Iowa’s 2009 Tobacco Control Progress Report shows that per capita cigarette consumption decreased from 114 to 54 from 2006 to 2009. The drop is attributed to a combination of a $1 increase in cigarette taxes in 2007 and the passing of the Smokefree Air Act in 2008. Reductions in tobacco use among youth in Iowa have slowed, with cigarette use in high school students almost the same in 2008 as it was in 2004. Decreased awareness of anti-tobacco campaigns may be contributing to the stalling of youth smoking prevention efforts. The report was developed by the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Behavioral Research. Click here to read more.

2006 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) dataset and documentation available online
The CDC Office on Smoking and Health is pleased to announce that the 2006 National Youth Tobacco Survey dataset and documentation are now available online for public use. In addition, states can compare their estimates of prevalence of youth tobacco use with national data. The CDC website offers downloadable datasets, a methodology report, a copy of the questionnaire, and a codebook. The NYTS provides nationally representative data about middle and high school youths’ tobacco-related beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and exposure to pro- and anti-tobacco influences. This report was produced by the CDC and NCI, in collaboration with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). Click here to access the report.
National profile of local health departments: Tobacco prevention and control
In 2005 and 2008, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) conducted two formal surveys of local health departments (LHDs) across the nation to capture a representative understanding of the public health workforce and LHD activities. A new fact sheet highlights the results of the 2005 and 2008 National Profile of Local Health Departments (Profile) that are relevant to tobacco prevention and control (TPC) activities in LHDs. The report describes regulatory activities, environmental health and other specific programmatic activities, and changes to provision of these services over the three year survey period. The intended audience includes local and state programmatic staff and national partners that are interested in TPC activities at the local level. Click here to download a fact sheet, or visit the NACCHO website to request a copy.
