Smoking has significant influence on our genes and the way they function
Research published in BMC Medical Genomics indicates that both individual genes and networks of gene interaction are influenced by cigarette smoking, with many of the alterations in function corresponding to smoking-related pathologies. Investigators used quantitative transcriptional profiles of 1,240 participants, 297 of whom were current smokers, to correlate smoking status with gene expression levels. Analysis of this data showed that 323 genes had expression levels that were correlated with smoking behavior, many of them related to disease processes linked to smoking, such as immune response, cell death, and cancer.
