Join SAMHSA and the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center on February 10, 2010 at 1 pm ET for our next webinar, “Addressing barriers to delivering tobacco dependence interventions across mental health care settings.” The speakers will discuss strategies for working through barriers clinicians often face when addressing tobacco dependence among persons with mental illnesses. This webinar will move beyond making the case for the importance and need for tobacco dependence interventions in this population. Participants will be encouraged to share ideas and strategize about how to work through tobacco dependence treatment challenges at the staff and systems level. Click here to register.

On February 12, 2010, the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education is hosting its annual symposium, “It’s About a Billion Lives: Advances in Tobacco Control – Celebrating Tobacco Research and Education at UCSF.” The symposium will bring together thought leaders from around the country to examine the latest implications of tobacco’s effects on health and policy. The symposium will also include a poster session displaying the breadth of tobacco research at UCSF. NACDD Chronic Disease Academy

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors presents this unique learning opportunity with ten different skill-based educational programs geared toward the chronic disease workforce and anyone interested in chronic disease prevention and control. Each session, ranging in length from 1 to 1 ½ days, will be an interactive, intense training experience. The course content of all Academy classes are based on the NACDD Competencies for Chronic Disease Practice, and will be delivered in five identified areas/tracks: Build Support; Design and Evaluate Programs; Influence Policies and Systems Change; Lead Strategically; and Manage Programs and Resources. Through With Chew Week is held the third full week of February each year. The Great American Spit Out (GASpO) is held on the Thursday of Through With Chew Week. These events give spit tobacco users the inspiration to quit for a day or even longer. The Through With Chew Week Toolkit was designed to help communities enhance their efforts in conducting a successful Through With Chew Week and GASpO. The military tobacco cessation website, ucanquit2.org, offers GASpO tools and resources for tobacco users, including a quit plan, calendar, quit blog, and a calculator to determine how much money a tobacco user can save by quitting. Native Tobacco Policy Summit

Washington State’s Native People for Cancer Control is hosting the Native Tobacco Policy Summit on February 18-19, 2010 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. The summit is for American Indian leaders, tribal health directors and clinic staff, tribal tobacco program coordinators, advocates, policymakers, and others interested in working on tobacco policy within American Indian communities. The summit will provide an overview of the history of tobacco policy change in Native communities, and offer step by step guidance on how to adopt policies and address key community priorities and concerns. Promising Practices: Achieving Health and Social Equity in Tobacco Control

The next national Break Free Alliance & NAATEN conference will take place April 27-28, 2010 in New Orleans. The Break Free Alliance and the National African American Tobacco Education Network, both programs of the Health Education Council, are hosting this conference as a follow-up to our first successful 2008 conference in Detroit. The conference focuses its efforts on reducing the burden of tobacco use in low socioeconomic status and ethnic minority populations. Our conference tracks for 2010 will focus on a new era in tobacco control: Track A –Integrating Tobacco Control and Chronic Disease Prevention; Track B – Increasing Access to Prevention, Education and Cessation; and Track C – Yes We Can! – Influencing Policy, Legislation and Health Care Reform. World No Tobacco Day 2010

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the world every year on May 31. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. WHO has selected "Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women" as the theme for the next World No Tobacco Day. World No Tobacco Day 2010 will give overdue recognition to the importance of controlling the epidemic of tobacco among women. Click here for more information.

APACT 2010 Conference: Asia Pacific Conference on Tobacco or Health

The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) is pleased to partner with the Asia Pacific Association for the Control of Tobacco (APACT) to bring evidence-based solutions to the tobacco control issues faced by healthcare providers, advocates and others in the Asia/Pacific region. The APACT conference is the premier tobacco control conference for the Asia Pacific, with the 2010 conference focusing on Change, challenge and progress: FCTC in the Asia Pacific. APACT 2010 aims to encourage tobacco control and public health advocates, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and especially youth leaders, to share experiences and discuss strategies for implementation of the FCTC.
