Call for Proposals: Access to Cessation Treatment for Tobacco in our Nation (ACTTION)
Through the ACTTION (Access to Cessation Treatment for Tobacco in our Nation) State Grant Program, Partnership for Prevention will be awarding grants of $20,000 to $40,000 for the implementation of innovative strategies to increase access to tobacco cessation treatments. The opportunity is open to state/territorial agencies and organizations. The grants will be one year in duration, with a possibility of further funding in the second year. NACCHO 2010 Model Practices program
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) invites local health departments to submit online applications to the 2010 Model Practices program. Active NACCHO members whose applications are selected as model practices will be eligible to receive a stipend towards travel and registration for the NACCHO Annual conference, based on availability of funding. Additionally, all applications chosen as model and promising practices will be placed in NACCHO’s Model Practice Database. The Model Practice Database is an online, searchable collection of practices across public health areas, including Community Health, Environmental Health, Public Health Infrastructure, and Emergency Preparedness. Opportunity for Public Comment: Draft National Plan for Action for addressing disparities
The U.S. Office of Minority Health has posted the draft National Plan for Action for addressing health disparities. The action plan is open for public comments through February 12, 2010. The National Plan for Action, which captures the status of minority health disparities in our country and proposes 20 strategies for their elimination, is a collaborative effort of representatives from community, faith-based and non-profit organizations, academic institutions, foundations and Federal, State and local agencies. Comment forms have been set up to allow the public to comment on individual chapters of the report or on the report overall. Comments will not be posted at this time, but will be used for development of the final plan. Click here to view the draft, and to comment on the National Plan.

Opportunity for Public Comment: National Institutes of Health to conduct unprecedented study of LGBT health
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has been asked by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct a study on LGBT health issues. The report will cover topics such as the state of knowledge regarding LGBT health status and health disparities; the impact of family and social acceptance of sexual orientation on mental health and personal safety; the effects of certain demographics and social determinants on the health of LGBT persons; and research gaps and training needs that may impede advancement of knowledge. The public can comment on the plan, “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Issues and Research Gaps and Opportunities”, through February 1, 2010. Nonsmokers' Rights Legal Research and Advocacy Competition
Law students are invited to submit an innovative 1,000 word proposal on the use of legal research and advocacy to further the advancement of nonsmokers' rights. Finalists will be offered a travel grant to the Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers' Rights in Washington, DC to compete for the grand prize of $5,000. This competition is sponsored by the Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights, the National Center for Nonsmokers' Rights, and Law Professor John F. Banzhaf III of the George Washington University Law School. Click here for more information.
