Request for Applications: Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program
ONDCP, in partnership with SAMHSA, is pleased to announce that the 2010 Drug Free Communities (DFC) Request for Applications (RFA) is now available for review and response. As a cornerstone of ONDCP's National Drug Control Strategy, the DFC program funds community coalitions addressing youth substance use. DFC provides the funding necessary for communities to identify and respond to local substance use problems, including tobacco use. Request for Applications: 2010 NIDA Translational Avant-Garde Award for Medication Development for Diseases of Addiction
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Translational Avant-Garde Award is designed to support dedicated and talented basic and/or clinical researchers with the vision, drive and expertise necessary to translate research discoveries into medications for the treatment of diseases of addiction. Through this funding opportunity announcement, NIDA is committed to making significant advances in the development of safe and efficacious products for the treatment of disorders stemming from tobacco, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or prescription opiate use or abuse. Call for Nominations: American Lung Association and Koop Foundation, Inc. Unsung Heroes' Award
The annual Unsung Heroes' Award is presented jointly by the American Lung Association and the Koop Foundation, Inc. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people diligently at work in the Tobacco Wars, fighting against the overwhelming financial superiority of Big Tobacco. They are frequently unrecognized, in spite of their perseverance and major contributions to the anti-tobacco effort.  They are indeed truly unsung heroes. Other Announcements

More than 175 public health organizations send letter of support for health reform to Congress and the President
Nearly 200 public health organizations, including several involved in tobacco control, have sent a letter to President Obama, the US Senate, and the US House of Representatives to show their support for comprehensive health care reform efforts. The letter emphasized the importance of modernizing and increasing funding for prevention, wellness, and public health in the United States. Some of the organizations signing the letter include the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Lung Association, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, along with several professional health organizations and numerous state and local health departments. Communities Putting Prevention to Work award recipients announced: More than $119 million awarded to states and territories
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded over $119 million to states and territories to fund efforts to reduce obesity, increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and decrease smoking. The funding will help communities and schools support quitlines, healthy food and physical activity campaigns, and anti-tobacco media campaigns. The efforts supported by this funding are a portion of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative, which is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Nonsmokers' Rights Legal Research and Advocacy Competition
Law students are invited to submit an innovative 1,000 word proposal on the use of legal research and advocacy to further the advancement of nonsmokers' rights. Finalists will be offered a travel grant to the Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers' Rights in Washington, DC to compete for the grand prize of $5,000. This competition is sponsored by the Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights, the National Center for Nonsmokers' Rights, and Law Professor John F. Banzhaf III of the George Washington University Law School. Click here for more information.
