Webinar: Practical Clinical Strategies for Delivering Evidence-based Tobacco Dependence Interventions

The Smoking Cessation Leadership center and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will be holding a webinar addressing successful interventions for tobacco dependence. The webinar will be led by Dr. Daryl Sharp of the University of Rochester Medical Center and will cover the epidemiology of smoking and mental illness; the nature of nicotine addiction and pharmacodynamics; effective strategies for tobacco dependence treatment; and how to motivate people with mental health disorders to stop smoking. FDA Stakeholder Discussion for State and Local Tobacco Control Officials

The FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) has announced locations and tentative dates for the first round of the Center’s Stakeholder Discussion Series. Each session, moderated by an expert facilitator, will focus on key topics specific to the primary stakeholder community present. The first session, tailored to state and local tobacco control officials, will be held on October 3, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. A limited number of individuals have been invited to actively participate in the discussions, but the sessions are open to any observers who register in advance, as space allows. National Health Education Week

The theme for this year’s National Health Education Week (NHEW) is "A Tobacco Free Nation Through Health Education." The event is sponsored by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). Given the scope of the week, each day will focus on a different aspect of tobacco prevention and control. Since 1995, the celebration of NHEW has focused national attention on a major public health issue and promoted consumers’ understanding of the role of health education in promoting the public’s health. Visit the SOPHE website for updates on NHEW 2010. SOPHE has developed a promotional flyer and a planning kit containing tips on how to promote NHEW.

APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition

Great American Smokeout

The 35th annual Great American Smokeout (GASO) will be held on November 18, 2010. This event is held each year on the third Thursday in November to encourage smokers to quit for a day in the hope they may quit for good. Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) 17th Annual Meeting

The 17th annual Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting will be held from February 16-19, 2011 in Toronto, Canada. Abstracts are requested for the conference and pre-conference workshops. A call for abstracts is open through September 10, 2010. The Rapid Response Abstract system will open Wednesday, December 1, 2010; more details will be available in the fall. SRNT was founded in 1994 to coordinate and advance research on a broad array of topics ranging from the pharmacology of nicotine to the societal influences on use of tobacco.

Clearing the Air: An Institute for Policy Advocacy, VII

The purpose of this 3-day skills-building and strategy planning Institute is to enhance awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke, share recent science and economic data and first-hand experiences, and expand the capacity of smokefree advocates, researchers, and other public health professionals nationwide.
