Compliance and enforcement contract awards
To date, the FDA has awarded eight states with contracts that will allow them to assist the FDA with enforcing and implementing the regulation of the Tobacco Control Act in terms of limiting the availability of tobacco to young people. Alabama, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee were selected following a request for proposals in March, and will be contacted by the FDA in the near future to begin activities such as commissioning state officials and starting training programs. Additional contracts will be awarded throughout the year, with another solicitation for proposals expected in fiscal year 2011, with the long-term goal of establishing contracts with each U.S. state and territory that demonstrates an ability to assist the FDA with enforcement capabilities.
