World No Tobacco Day
May 31, 2009
The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2009 is “Tobacco Health Warnings,” with an emphasis on the picture warnings that have been shown to be particularly effective at making people aware of the health risks of tobacco use and convincing them to quit. More and more countries are requiring that packages of tobacco graphically depict the dangers of the product's use, as called for in guidelines to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Click here to visit the WHO World No Tobacco Day website. The site includes World No Tobacco Day materials such as posters and brochures, information about pictorial tobacco warnings, and a call for action with steps that policymakers, NGOs and nonprofits, and the general public can take to support pictorial warnings and other approaches to educate consumers about the effects of tobacco use.
