Call for Abstracts: 2009 LGBTQ Tobacco Summit
The National LGBT Tobacco Control Network is pleased to announce a call for abstracts for the seventh Annual LGBT Tobacco Summit. This conference/training will engage, educate, and energize LGBTQ communities and allies in the fight against commercial tobacco abuse. The Summit planning committee has expressed particular interest in abstract submissions in the following areas: working with the business community, youth participation in tobacco control, collaboration between tobacco control and other fields, and reaching all of our communities. Submissions on other relevant topics, however, are welcomed. The deadline for submitting abstracts is April 3, 2009. Call for Abstracts: 5th National Summit on Smokeless and Spit Tobacco

Call for Papers: The Lancet-COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth most common cause of death worldwide and is predicted to overtake lower respiratory tract diseases to become third after ischaemic heart and cerebrovascular diseases by 2030. The burden of disease is increasing, particularly in countries such as India and China, largely because of tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke and because of poor indoor and outdoor air quality. To highlight the importance of COPD and the challenges it poses, The Lancet will publish a special COPD issue this September. In response to this call for papers, research papers related to any aspect of COPD may be submitted online by April 20, 2009. Click here for more information on this call for abstracts. Call for Applications: Unique Interactions Between Tobacco Use and HIV/AIDS
The purpose for this FOA issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Fogarty International Center encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to stimulate research related to the unique, interactive health effects of cigarette smoking and HIV/AIDS. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-254, that encourages applications under the Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism. Call for Applications: Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for Outreach and Health Communications
Applications are now being accepted for The Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for Outreach and Health Communications to reduce tobacco use among what the American Legacy Foundation calls "Priority Populations." Identified priority populations are Native Americans/Alaska Natives, Hispanics, African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Low SES, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities. The Adams scholarship will award a total of $10,000 annually for up to two candidates to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. The scholarship, named for founding Legacy board member, Dr. Alma S. Adams, will be awarded to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to community service or used the visual arts or media to convey culturally-appropriate health messages on behalf of a disadvantaged population. American Legacy Foundation® statement: financial downturn precipitates suspension of grants program
The American Legacy Foundation has sadly announced that due to ongoing financial downturn, the Foundation will be suspending its competitive grant-making program through 2012 to focus on population-based strategies. The Board of Directors believes that this is the best strategy to maximize the impact of the limited available funding. The grant program will be slowly phased out over the next two years, but the Foundation will honor its existing commitments. Click here to read the full statement.
Legacy: American Legacy Foundation® celebrates decade of saving lives
The American Legacy Foundation, the national non-profit organization that created the award-winning national truth® youth smoking prevention campaign and has been a leader in grant-making, research and counter-marketing efforts aimed at saving lives from tobacco, celebrated its tenth anniversary. As part of a year-long effort to commemorate its first decade, the Foundation unveiled a new Web site, http://www.mylegacystory.com/ and is encouraging those impacted by the toll of tobacco to log on and share their stories and support the Foundation’s work to reduce the deadly toll of tobacco. Legacy was created as a result of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement reached between 46 states, five territories and the tobacco industry. Click here to read the full press release.
