Requests for Proposals

Call for Proposals: The Bloomberg Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use
A global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact evidence-based tobacco control interventions. While applications are welcome from all low- and middle-income countries (as categorized by the World Bank), the Initiative places a priority on countries with the greatest number of tobacco users. Governmental and non-governmental organizations based in eligible countries can apply for grants. Proposals are due on Friday, August 14, 2009. Click here to view the call for proposals.

Funding Opportunity Announcement: Testing Tobacco Products Promoted to Reduce Harm
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), invites applications that propose multidisciplinary research on potential reduced-exposure tobacco products, both smoked and smokeless. The multidisciplinary studies can span basic, biological, behavioral, surveillance, and epidemiology research. The overarching goal of this FOA is to determine whether potential reduced-exposure tobacco products provide a truly less-harmful alternative to conventional tobacco products, both at the individual and population level. The application deadline is May 7, 2012. Click here to read more about this FOA.

New network to combat noncommunicable diseases
The World Health Organization announced the formation of a global network of organizations and experts that will increase efforts to address noncommunicable diseases by building global partnerships and strengthening governments’ capacity to prevent and treat these conditions. Noncommunicable conditions such as heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, and injuries cause the majority of all global deaths, yet addressing these problems has not yet been declared a global priority. At a meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July, leaders called upon the international development community to integrate indicators on noncommunicable diseases and injuries into the core Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) monitoring and evaluation system.
