Call for Applications: Unique Interactions Between Tobacco Use and HIV/AIDS
The purpose for this FOA issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Fogarty International Center encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to stimulate research related to the unique, interactive health effects of cigarette smoking and HIV/AIDS. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-254, that encourages applications under the Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism. Call for Nominations: The Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is now accepting nominations for the 2009 Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence. The award seeks to honor an individual who exhibits respect in honoring the diversity of members of the tobacco control community, works to build consensus and bring people together, serves as a mentor and/or role model for others in the movement, has an established record of achievement, and demonstrates the potential to be an even more significant future leader. All nominations must be received by February 13, 2009 and must be submitted by mail. Click here to read more and download the nomination form.
Call for Nominations: 2009 Tobacco Industry Documents Awards
The American Legacy Foundation has extended the deadline to nominate individuals who have creatively utilized tobacco industry documents for public benefit to February 6, 2009. Nominate colleagues, students, activists or anyone else who has made research, policy and advocacy contributions that resulted in positive action from use of tobacco industry documents. The two awards that will be presented are the Sybil G. Jacobs Adult Award for Outstanding Use of Tobacco Industry Documents and the Christine O. Gregoire Youth/Young Adult Award for Outstanding Use of Tobacco Industry Documents. Winners will be honored at the National Conference on Tobacco or Health on June 11th, 2009 in Phoenix, AZ and will receive $7500. Click here for more information or to submit your nomination.

Anti-smoking advocate is named to health post
William V. Corr, executive director of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is the prospective nominee to be the number 2 official at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). If the Senate confirms President Barack Obama’s nominee, Corr will be the deputy to the secretary of DHHS. Former Senate Democratic leader, Tom Daschle, has been selected as Secretary of DHHS. Corr has worked to reduce tobacco use and exposure among children through lobbying and his work with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Click here to read more.
Emory receives $14 million Gates Foundation grant to reduce tobacco use in China (GA)
Emory University has received a five year, $14 million grant from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant is intended to help reduce tobacco use in China. A collaboration between the Emory Global Health Institute and the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) will create the Emory Global Health Institute-China Tobacco Partnership. The partnership will work with public health leaders in China to promote evidence-based tobacco control programs that are culturally appropriate and tailored to individual cities and provinces in China. Funding and support will also be designated to develop national tobacco control resource centers in China. According to the World Health Organization, China has the world’s highest tobacco prevalence and is the chief producer of tobacco products globally. Click here to read more.
Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates join to combat global tobacco epidemic
Michael Bloomberg and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced a truly historic commitment of $500 million to the global fight against tobacco use, focused on helping governments in developing countries implement proven policies and programs to reduce tobacco use. This announcement highlights both the devastating scope of the global tobacco epidemic and the fact that it is entirely preventable if nations seize this opportunity to implement proven solutions.
